my lovely friend mel mentioned that she really loved my 30th birthday pinata. so with that in mind, i made her a mini variety for her 30th birthday!

mel pinata

it measures about 20cm, and is covered in an ombre design of fluffy tissue. it was so much fun to make!

detail of snipped tissue paper... so much cutting!

and this is the picture of the little pinata in its new home and newly puffed up!

it was my friend rhea's 21st birthday a few days ago, and i was at a loss as to what to give her. since 21st's are a big deal (i think we have inherited it from the americans), i thought i would make her a papercut to commemorate the occasion.

i sketched it out first, making sure all the elements were connected so as to give it strength, then cut it out over several days. this is the cut out version

papercut

i wanted it to be something she would hang onto, so i put it in a white frame and didn't attached the background image to the papercut. this way, if her decor changes, she can change the back image to match!

this is the final piece

happy birthday rhea! hope you had a good one

09/10: pen pals

i have a lovely pen pal Bea, who lives in Austria.
She sends me the loveliest letters, presents and is an amazing artist... see the drawing below.

bea

i recently posted a parcel to her, which consisted of a lot of handmade things - a book of cartridge paper, a card, an envelope filled with post-its, which i wrote everytime i thought of something to tell her without writing a letter, a paper garland, and a kilometrico pen, which i use for all my biro drawings.

just a little while ago, my lovely friend mel got married! and what a beautiful wedding it was too!

so when the invitation said something along the lines of guests don't need to bring presents, i was a bit bummed - i like giving and wrapping presents!! so hey, i decided that i would take one anyway, plus it would feel weird to turn up without a present. knowing that the bride and groom probably already had enough "home" stuff of their own, i decided to make them something decorative they could hang up on the wall and remember their wedding by. knowing also that mel is a bit like me about poms and paper and stuff like that, i decided to make her some paper flowers. and in order to stick it up on the wall, i attached them to heavy bookboard in order to make a wreath.

my lovely friend zoe just celebrated her 30th birthday.
while thinking of what i could get her for a present, i remembered a conversation we had at the last finders keepers markets. we were looking at these papercut creations of forests made of layers of paper, which she loved, and to which i replied "i'm sure i can make one of those, it can't be that hard" (i seem to say this a lot... and it often leads to me being very frustrated because i am very stubborn and don't let things defeat me!)

anyway, so i made her one for her birthday. i decided that since she liked the idea of the forests, that i would stick with that theme, but i also tried to add a "secret garden" sense to it to make it a little bit different.

here is the final product
zoes 30th
zoes 30th 2

i also decided to stick with the papercutting theme and made this card
zoe card
(i don't know if you can see it on the photos, but if the card is the right way up, it says zoe, but when you turn it around it says 30!)

it was my nana and grampa's diamond wedding anniversary a little while ago.

that's 60 years of marriage.... that's a loooong bloody time!

anyways, so big event demanded an amazing card. i came up with this idea while watching tv, and promptly scribbled it onto the sketchpad app on my phone (haha nerrrrrrd). i thought about how everything has changed over the 60 years they have been married - from the romantic past, to modernity - and came up with the idea to combine the two. this was tough, since the different time periods don't really combine very well...

i decided on the idea of 6 diamonds (60 would have been a bit too ambitious) made from sharp lines and cut out of paper, with vintage wallpaper showing underneath. to stick with the theme of the hard lines of modernity, i also used a more "digital" looking font made from dots for the number "60"

this is the final result... read more to see more detail and process shots.

my friend Erin is getting married! A few weekends ago she had her engagement party and, for the life of me, i could not work out what to get her for a present... its not really a wedding present, but you have to take something right?!

anyway, i have been making a few of what i call "keepsake books" - they are little coptic-bound books into which i sew handmade envelopes, the idea being that you could write a journal, add photos and draw things on the pages, while collecting memorable ephemera in the envelopes.

these are some photos i took of the one i gave her and mark...
